BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Council met as usual on Tups ’ay evening. Present : The Mayor (Mi Tuwntey) and Crs Whhiray, Harding, Coleman, Taylor, He; burn, Lucas. Lewis, and Dunloo

A letter was read, being a god.? of a claim for £27 made upon ths owners of ths s.e. Fanny, for damage to the footbridge. The M»yor said tha bridge had been approved of by the Marine Department. It was further decided that a claim be made for t>:e additional dazaagc done by the schooner Opotiki. The Inspector of Nuisances made a general report. The Overseer, in his report, mentioned that the repairs to the Taruheru footbridge hud been completed, aid other small works had be j n finished. Day labor, £3. The following accounts were passed for payment:—G. L. Greenwood £5 ss. Cemetery Trustees £25, Bridges account £1 19?, W. Campbell £1 15?, A. Phipps £1 15s, J. Preston £3 ss, Whitby and Partington £1 0s 9.1, Common, Snelton and Co. £l, Gas Com party 17? 4d, A. Muir £5 17s 63, W. H. Clayton £2 14% Boylan arid Co. £1 3< lid, G. Humphreys £6 12s 91, C. Rice £1 15s, Smith and Grey £1 ss, G. Humphreys £4 10s, T. Morrison £l5 10?. In regard to Mr Morrison’s contract for painting Mr Booth’s house, it was decided to retain £2 in hand fur a month, according vo specifications, but to make no deduction fur overtime.

Cr Harding referred attention to the footpath along Read’s Quay from the Taruheru bridge to Lowe Street, and recommended that two or three loads of shingle be put upon it. —Tae Overseer's attention was directed to the matter.

Cr Lewis recommended that some of the metal in hand be broken and the ruts iu Gladstone road he filled up. The work would not cost much, perhaps £lO or £l2, but. delay would increase the cost. Be advised that tenders be called.

C Lucas agreed with the suggestion, but thought it would be inadvisable to cause delay by calling tenders. It was agreed that the tenders be opened by the Works Committee. Cr Whinray commented adversely on the way the last contract for metalling the road was carried out, and he thought there was sufficient metal on the road if the mounds were broken up. The Overseer on being asked, said it would be preferable to put the fresh matal oa. The formal resolution iu regard to the annual rate was made.
