The Standard states that the dishonest conduct of New Zealand shippers is ruining the flax and other industries. Count Kalnoky, Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, declares that owing to the influence of the Emperor of Germany the Triple Alliance was never plainer nor firmer than at the present time. Bishops Moorehouse and Bolton hold there are doctrinal objections to cremation and to the burial of dissenters in consecrated ground. Lord Wolseley has refused the appointment of Commandcr-in-Chief in India, and retires from his position of AdjutantGeneral in July. The Daily News considers the demand for railways in Victoria is excessive, and states that members would be rejected from Parliament unless they supported the borrowing of money with which to feed their districts. Mr F. Abigail received a hearty reception in Ulster, and funds are being readily subscribed for the purpose of sending delegates to Australia to try and neutralise the effects of the Irish Home Rulers’ visit. There is some difficulty among local Unionists in agreeing upon the selection of representatives. Probably three will be chosen, Dr Kane being one, and others resident of Dublin and Cork. Columbian sealers have purchased a fast sailing steamer to enable them to outpace American cruisers in Behring Straits. Vessels recently arriving from St. George’s Sound have been forbidden by the Customs officials to unload without payment of duties. French and English warships are proceeding on cruises. Tha fishermen are dispersing, and the trouble is over for the present year. It will, however, be probably renewed next year.
