(FROM ova OWN CORRESPONDENT.) DRILL INSTRUCTOR AND BAILIFF. Napier, last night. At the R.M Court yesterday Patrick John Carey, late Drill Instructor for Hawke's Bay volunteers, was committed for trial on a charge of grievously assaulting James Morrison, bailiff of tha Napier Magistrate's Court. IN TUB LAWYER'S GRIP. Captain Preece gave judgment yesterday in th* esse Moreton v. Cresswell. The plaintiff hai sued the Union Company for the value of a portmanteau lost from on board one of the company’s boats, end obtained judgment tor £2O. Defendant was plaintiff’s solicitor, and deductei £7 Ils as his costs, merely rendering a bill tor that amount, in one ram, without particulars. Plaintiff thereupon sued Cresswell, to recover back eons portion of the £7 11". His Worship awarded the plaintiff £3 3s, with £2 6> costs. Mr Brassey, who appeared for tbe defendant, aeked leave to appeal. Mr Lascelles, on plaintiffs behalf, strongly objected, as the amount involved was so small. His Worship said he would hear counsel on the point on Monday. AN ELOQUENT FRBAOHEB. The Bev. G. C. Grubb, Missionary from Ireland, concluded to-night a series of services in the Nspier Cathedral. He has had crowded congregations every evening since the commencement last Saturday, and being an eloquent and forcible preacher has produced a great impression.
