The following is a description of the race for the Birthday Cup at the Sydney Turf Club’s meeting, from which it will be seen the New Zealander (Hilda) showed up very poorly : Batting : 4 to 1 each v. Making the most of his advantage Honeydew led on to Cutts’s, where Pet Girl headed him and appeared at the front for a fsw strides, but as they flushed past Oxenham’a Inaignia, against the rails, took up tho running and showed clear from Hilda, Pet Girl, and Magnus, who were succeeded by Moscow, Mantilla, Kingsley, Swing, and Eclipse, while Tartar, who had been running out wide, and Lancer acted ae whippers-in. Mantilla and Magnus want up second and third at the back of the course, and when passing the six. furlongs post were within half a length of the leader, and Hilda, Eveline, Pet Girl, and Moscow tiring, Swing, Kingsley, and Eclipse, began to improve their positions. Making every post a winning one, Insignia and Magnus raced up the slight incline and part the five furlong post on terms; aud immediately in their wake could be seen the colors of Mantilla, Eveline, Kingsley, aud Eclipse, but tbe favourite was in difficulties, and cried enoughs little further on. Magnus headed Insignia when ball way round the band, but the latter again got on terms, and it was hard to tell which entered the straight first, hut both were clear of the diatresred Mantilla, who hero gave way to Eclipse and Jack. Magnus just showed in front for a few strides, but Insignia, fighting the battle right loyally, caught him again and outpaced him at the half distance, but had no sooner done so than Olesl brought Eclipse with a great rattle, and, dashing him up on the inside, outpaced and out-stayed tho two finishers, and won a pretty race by a length and a quarter from Insignia, who had Magnus at hie girths, with Jack, Federation, and The Queen almost on terms, and succeeded by Lancer, Moscow, Anttous, Pet Girl, Kingsley, Swing, Sir William, Muriel an\Evelina, while the last io finish Wets Honeydew and Antelope, Time, 8 minutes SO.) aeowdih
