Mukaraka Notes.
(fbom our own correspondent.) Midwinter, with an abnormal rainfall to usher it in, is now upon us. The paddocks on the flat are very wet, to the great detriment of the stock. All concur in saying that this is the wettest season experienced for years. The Royal Oak Hotel was re-opened on Tuesday, Ist July, and is, I am informed, in its appointments a credit to the proprietary. At the opening day tha usual generosity was displayed. The Matawhero Literary and Debating Society meet on Friday evening, at 7.30, for consideration of rules and to receive names of members. The affair promises well, as one of its cardinal objects is to promote sociability among the residents. “Music that gentler ou the spirit lies than ti ed eyelids upon tired eyes”—that time-honored softener of obstinacy, will be one of its chief attractions. Debates will take place with a view to the solution of the still unsolvable social problems of the nineteenth century. Might. I mention a few hard intellectual nuts:—The ladies first—Woman’s Mission, Women in Politics, Women in the professions, Mark Twain’s Mother, etc. A Glance at the )ate Upheaval of Society, The Fine Arts, Execution by Electricity—its advantages, Death—the Gate of Life, The Influence of the Modern Diana, Did Shakespeare or Bacon write Hamlet ? At the usual monthly meeting of the Matawhero School Committee, permission was granted to the above mentioned Society for the use of the school on Friday evenings. The Committee decided to make a mere nominal charge for hire, as it was considered the objects of the Society were advantageous.
