Shakespearian Season.

The programme announced for Mr Geo. C. Miln’s visit to Gisborne is headed by one of Shakespeare's most interesting and popular comedies—" The Merchant of Venice.” The character of Shylock as portrayed by Mr Miln, has not that intensely repulsive appearance which has sometimes been embodied iu this impersonation, but stands out as a living exampleof the injustice and persecution heaped upon the Jewish race about the sixteenth century. Mr Miln invariably wins in this personation not only the admiration of his audience, but, what is a greater rarity, its entire sympathy. Miss Kate Douglas’s conception of the part of Portia is said to be of a beautifully realistic description, and her acting has been spoken of as of exceptional merit in the principal cities of Australasia. Tho remaining characters are reported to be equally well sustained, and with the additional reputation which Mr Miln brings with him as a stage manager of great originality, wc may look forward to witnessing some ot the most complete productions ever seen in this district. The great historical play, Julius Ctosar, is dated for Tuesday, in which Mr Miln will appear in his popular n'>le ot Marc Antony, and Shakespeare’s celebrated love tragedy Borneo and Juliet will be produced on Wednesday. The plan of reserved seats is at Mr W. Good's, where seats may be booked for each performance, a large number having already been appropriated.
