Notes from the West.

(from our own correspondent.) Mauataeha, July 3. There is an old saying with regard to the want of adhesiveness possessed by the currant coin of tho realm when in the possession of a certain class of people; and though we do not affect to doubt that the intelligence of members of Cook County Council is of the very highest order, their actions would lead to the supposition that bankruptcy will supervene at no distinct date.

As previously mentioned Mr Trafford’s fence impeded traffic on th; Mahia road, and to avoil inconvenience it was decided that a road should be formed outside of his section. The contractor who is erecting the fence offered to pet f orm the necessary work for the sum of £4. This offer was not accepted—but P, Bartlett, a half-caste, residing at. Whareonguonga, was instructed to form a track—which it now appears does not extend more than two thirds of tha distance, and is practically useless, being a cul-de-sac terminating in a precipice ot which honorable mention has heretofore been made—for the sum of £5. The most sanguine optimist could hardly call this economy. The H B. Education Board discovered all in a hurry tbe other day, that the site of Maraetaha school, which was given along with a building by Mr J. W. Johnson, had not been properly transferred, and Mr Grant came out to survey the site, which process occupied a considerable time, owing to interruptions from the clerk of the weather, and inaccuracies in a former survey of the road. I see that Matawhero are resurrecting the defunct Mutual Improvement Society under a new name. I would suggest the elimination of that apple of discord “Devotional Exercises,” the allusion will be palpable to former members. May it go on and prosper.

Arboreal devas’ation is being vigorously proceeded with on Wairakuia station, though the sylvan deities have invoked the assistance of Jupiter Pluvius for the protection of their leafy bowers, and that assistance has been accorded with no niggard hand. One of our community, Mr B. Dasent, left for Napier to day, eu route for Wellington.
