POLITICAL NOTES.

MINISTERS SWALLOW THE LEEK. [special to the standabd.] Wellington, last night. Tho Ministers succeeded in diverting the serious crisis by making substantial concessions in order to meet the demands made by the retrenchment party within their own ranks. Although they did not succeed in satisfying the whole of the members of that party they succeeded in diverting a division in the retrenchment camp, thus securing that majority they realised could not possibly be obtained by the maintenance of the determination not to reduce the estimates. The Opposition view the whole proceedings with the utmost hostility, the outcome of which was an exceedingly warm discussion for two hoars, during the afternoon sitting of the House. The debate on the statement was thus still further prolonged, and was not resumed until the evening session, when very little either new or interesting was elicited. Mr Seddon has now given notice of a slight reduction in the estimates, as an instruction to the Government that the feeling of the House is in favor of a dissolution in September. In the House the Hon. Mr Mitchelson stated that he intended to move for the appointment of a committee to investigate the charges made by Mr Hutchison in regard to the transactions between tho Government and the Bank of New Zealand.

A rcundrobin, headed by Mr Ballance and signed by every member of the Opposition, has been presented to Sir Robert Stout, asking him to re enter politics and take the leadership of the Liberal party. No reply has been received, but the Opposition members think Sir Robert will accede to the request.
