Mr Withy has been appointed Chairman of the Hutchison Charges Committee, which sat yesterday and to day. Little has, however, been done. In the House last night, the amendment by Mr Ballance, directed against the continuance of Primage Duty, was lost by 84 to 23. Mr Monk’s motion, drafted by the Premier, with respect to the further reduction ot estimates by £50,000, was carried. Sydney Taiwhanga caused considerable amusement in the House yesterday afternoon by propounding a retrenchment schema of his cwn, Taiwhaio, he said, would accept the office of Governor of New Zealand at £1,500 per annum. A Maori Premier could be got for £7OO a year, and Ministers for £5OO a year each, thus effacing at one fell swoop an annual saving of £40,000.
