NAPIER NEWS-NOTES.

[special to standard.] THE EDUCATION BOARD. Napier, last night. A meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday. A letter was read from the Ormond Committee, applying for a grant for repairs and conveniences. The Board decided that the Committee should effect repairs from their own funds. From Waerengahika, recommending that Mrs McLure’s services be retained at £3O per annum. The Board could not grant the application under its regulations. A circular from the Education Department invited an expression of opinion as to the desirableness of using the same books in all public schools. After emniderable discussion the Board decided-iu the negative. The Scholarship Committee presented a revifel get of regulation?, to come into force oh January Ist next, except that Scholaiship examinations of the present year thould take place in December, instead of in November. The regulations were adopted. The Inspector presented a lengthy report on the standard syllabus, which the Board approved. H.B. JOCKEY CLUB. The annual meetin tr of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club was held yesterday. Captain Russell was reelected President, and Mr A. C. Lang- Treasurer. The balance sheet showed a favorable state of affairs, the overdraft having been reduced by £l3B, besides paying £360 for new plant and improvements. The gates yielded £738, grandstand £465, and totalisators netted £2379. The report and balance sheet were adopted. HARBOR BOARD-DONE OUT OF TEN THOUSAND POUNDS ! The Harbor Board also met yesterday. Mr Carr, the Board’s engineer, presented reports showing more fully the large amounts which the Board had lost through the mismeasurements of stone supplied by contractors. The opinion nnw ia that the losses must reach over £lO.OOO.
