The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Thursday, July 31, 1890. AN EXAMPLE OF ENERGY.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country's, Thy God’s, and truth’s.!

The members of tbe Wesleyan denomination in Gisborne ought to feel extremely pleased at the demonstration that was made on Tuesday afternoon on the occasion of laying the foundation stones of the new Wesleyan Church. The comparative novelty in Gisborne ot the ceremony would no doubt attract a large assemblage, but it requires more than a feeling of casual curiosity to account for the number of persons of all ages and sects who gathered round the foundations of the church on Tuesday last. An enthusiasm in the proceedings was evinced by all those present, and took a practical form in the shape of a large addition to the building fund. The proceedings of the evening were if anything more enthusiastic, and the interest which the occasion evoked was plainly depicted on the sea of upturned faces which were ready to greet the Mayor when he opened the public meeting in the Theatre Royal, where the attendance exceeded the sitting accommodation. The Wesleyans are to be congratulated on the successful issue of their building effort, and the outcome carries with it a lesson which the croakers, who are continually grumbling of hard times, and want of opportunities, would do well to take to heart. The success of the affair is mainly due to one man—the Rev. J. Ward—who by his indomitable energy and perseverance has succeeded in performing a task which some—and they were not a few—thought it madness to attempt. In less than two years, in spits of the dulness of the times, and the cry of want of money, he has succeeded in raising over This was not done without much toil and labor, but with an unflagging spirit Mr Ward has kept to his work, and better still he expects to have in all raised before the church is opened. Such a man deserves praise, and we could only wish there were more of his stamp in other paths of life.
