SOUTHERN NEWS.
Last night. Four Parliamentary candidates are now announced for Timaru, viz., Messrs E. G. Kerr, Taplin, H. J. Jones, and J. M. Toomey. Mr Marchant has decided not to stand for Taranaki, but will promote Sir Harry Atkinson’s candidature for Egmont. Mt Taylor proposes to intercept supply in the House by moving for the removal of the ■seat of Government from Wellington to Canterbury. At the Masonic Grand Lodge, Wellington, a resolution was passed declaring the French Orient Lodge irregular and unworthy of recognition, and that one month’s grace* be given it either to retire or be struck off ths list of Lodges holding allegiance to the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. Frederick Marshland Hadfield has been committed to trial at Christchurch on three charges of forgery. A meeting of about four hundred persons at Christchurch passed a resolution requesting the members of Parliament to support a Bill for the prohibition of publichouss licenses by popular vote without compensation.
