COUNTY COUNCIL.

The above body met yesterday afternoon, when there were pre?ent, the Chairman, and Crs Tuohy, Wethered, King, and Orr. An application, from Mr Neilson to cut wood on the Waipiro road was granted. Mr Maynard wrote complaining that the Co operative Company were selling pork in small quantities.—The Clerk was ordered to interview the Manager on the matter. The Chairman of the Te Aral Road Board wrote asking the Council to allow their Engineer to report upon the advisability of opening the original mouth of the Murewai creek, also to take levels and give an estimate of the cost. —The Council decided to meet the Chairman at their next meeting.

P. Cosgrove, Awanui, wrote complainig that the Council had never spent a sixpence on the south side of the landing reserve, and stating that the road was now in a very bad state.—Request refused. Mr A. C. Arthur, M.H.R., wrote:—Your communication of 12th inst., following wire of same tenor re the Council's approval of the Whangara settlement, and wish for an Act to be passed giving effect to such settlement, I showed the wire to the Hon. J. Mitchelson and talked the matter over wi’h him. He expressed himself as very pleased indeed that a settlement of the case had taken place, and quite approved of a short Act legalising the decision, but objected to make a general Act to embrace other such cases, as he feared it might not pass the House in its present obstructive mood. He has, I undersrand, had a bill drafted to give effect to the agreement, and if I can see my way to have it made a general and not a particular one, I shall do so. I should have answered your communication sooner, but was waiting to try and send some information, such as a draft of the proposed Act; but I knew you would understand that I was giving ths matter fullest attention. I will send copies of all Native Bills as soon as possible to the Counci*, and shall be obliged with any suggestions they can forward amending the same. If the Opposiiion would only behave we could get a lot of good work done.

T, W. Lewis also wrote informing the Council that a Bill with reference to the Whangara Block was in course of preparation. The following accounts were passed:— Brownlow and Taylor £29 17s, Moore and narty £2l 12s 61, T. Bartlett £5 18s W. A. Friar £2 6% Salaries £49 11« 81, Library Committee £3O, H. Hamblett £1 16s R- O. Stewart £2, General Government £5l 143 2d.
