The Auckland Trades and Labor Connoil has ordered that support be withdrawn from the Star, because the proprietor employs cheap labor. There will be a large amount of civil business at the next sittings of the Supreme Court, which begins next week. The list of cases is not yet completed, but includes some that will create a great deal of interest. The criminal business will also occupy a great deal of time.
The Wanganui citizens were very enthusiastic concerning the illuminated address and purse of sovereigns (£200) presented to Captain Cummins, on his retiring from the position of captain of the Fire Brigade. The Mayor paid a glowing tribute to Captain Cummins and the Brigade, and said he considered it one of the highest honors done him since his term of office, to be asked to make this presentation to Captain Cummins. The firemen they were justly proud of. but he was sure they were not valued as they should be, considering the responsibility they undertook, and the dangers they faced. Captain Cummins' faithful services, and self-denying work, would cause his memory to be retained among his fellow townsmen with affection dearer than friendship. An English reviewer says—The most interesting portions of Mr Bradleugh’s article on the " Socialism of Europe,” in the new number of the Universal Rsview, relate to the Socialism of Germany, which Mr Bradleugh regards as " the most dangerous to ths peace of Europe, partly because it is the most logical, partly because it has during the last 25 years been kept down with an iron hand, chiefly, perhaps, because first Prince Bismarck and now the Emperor have, in turn, shown that they regard State Socialism as practicable." Mr Bradlaugh's cure is the total repeal of the laws which forbid to Socialists free speech, publication and association.
