FOOTBALL.
TARANAKI V. GISBORNE. As the day approaches for the match with the Taranaki fifteen increased interest is being aroused not only in local football circles, bus among those who delight to see a good game of football. It is not. pretended that Gisborne can place in the fio.d a team that has had nearly the amount cf combined work that the visitors have undergone, but they are making good use of the short time left them for preparation. Of one thing we can be assured that there will ba a game well worth witnessing, and as the attendance of spectators at the football grounds during the past few weeks has been so encouraging to players, a big match like that of Saturday next ought to attract the largest crowd there has yet been seen on the Gisborne ground. It is not an easy thing to make arrangements for a visit from a team that is touring the colony, and the present visit is in a great measure due to the reasonableness of the Taranaki men. They have been asked to try and include Gisborne in thrir round, and nave consented, notwithstanding that it means they must submit to many little inconveniences. 80 as to prevent disappointment they decided to leave by the s.s. Southern Cross, instead of waiting for the fine large steamer, the Monowai. Some substitutes who are coming on to join the team could not get io time for the small boat, and leave Auckland by the Monowai, but even if they do not arrive in Gisborno in time that is not likely to affect the fixture, because a full team can be placed in the field. The Southern Cross should arrive in the bay tomorrow afternoon. If time permits the visitors will be taken for a drive round the country, and the match begins at three on Saturday afternoon. The local fifteen are getting themselves into the best possible fettle at such short notice. The gymnasium is well attended each evening, and some excellent practice is gone through It is a pity that this kind of thing was not instituied a little earlier in the season, for it keeps players well up to their work and affords a very jolly way of spending tbe evening. This sort of thing might well be encouraged at any time. AH things being considered the team is as good as could have been chosen in the district, bur how Maki comes to be first emergency is rather a puzzle to those who have closely watched tha play each Saturday af ernoon. He is a smart young fellow and promises well, but there are many others who might well come before him. He shines in a winning team, but is hardly to be considered where there is an equal or better team to be fought. Rua has certainly well earned his place in the team, and so also has Marshall.
