An incident which occurred in Christchurch recently conveys an idea of the hold the labor organisation m vemout has in the colony. It is stated that the compositors on the Lyttelton Times refused point blank to “set up” an advertisement which Messrs Wliitcombe and Tombs had sent in for insertion, and that it was only upon the appeal of the manager (who pointed out that such a course as was proposed to be taken might have a bad effect on the movement) that the “ chapel” consented to put the advertisement in type. Oae of the latest and most perfect stage illusions which skill.and science have sue ceeded in producing has been presented on the stage of the.Uaionsquare Theatre, in New York. The spectators are witnesses of a genuine horse race, ridden by jockies who liberally apply both whip and spur. Objects seem to fly past them at racing speed, and the contest is perceived from start to finish. An electric motor unrolls with the utmost rapidity the canvas behind, and another shifts the ground in an opposite direction, whi’e a third moves the fencing which forms the boundary of the racecoarse ; and a fourth sends a current of air in th© face of the jcckies, agitating the silk of their jackets. The aggregate effect is said to be most remarkable.
