FOOTBALL.
Great interest is centrpd iu the football match which takes place this afternoon in Cxptain Tucker’s paddock, the game being between a very strong team from Taranaki—a team that is now tourinp the colony—-and a fifteen representing this district. Last night a meeting of footballers was held, and reception and grounds committees were appointed. The visitors arrive by the Monowai, from Auckland, this afternoon. Luckily for them they did not fulfil their original iuteation of coming by the Southern Cross. The following are the local team, placed in position as from the goal line : — FULL BACK I Rutene e , e Rua | Skeet Suite i & Maude Fisher forwards: Boulton, Hutchinson, Lysnar, Loomb, Tuhoe, Nikoru, Hemi, Marehill, Robinson. Persons are requested to go round by the Cobden street gate, and not try to edge in along the fences, as has been done on previous occasions. A close watch will be kept on delinquents in this respect, and they may ba put to the trouble of having to walk roun 1 to the gate even though they have the money. If the afternoon is a fine one au enormous crowd of spectatorsis anticipated. TO THE STANDARD.J Auckland, last night. The Tai'anaki footballers Jefs to diy for Gisborne and Napier, by the Monowai, accompanied by one of the Auckland representatives, Mr J. Heffernan. On Wednesday night they attended Professor Carollo’s gymnasium alas?. Yesterday they had practice iu Potter’s piddock, and in the afternoon they had a trip to Like Takapuna. A large number of friends were down at the wharf to-day to farewell the visitors. The net proceeds of Siturday’s match, after paying all expenses for the entertainment of the visitors, was £lOO.
Oa next Saturday week a meeting of all footballers iu the district will be held to arrange for the formation of a Rugby Union. A great deal of interest is at present being evinced in f ootball circles in connection with rhe next Cup Match, which is set down fir this day fortnight, between ths Giabornq and Turanganui Clubs. All members of the Turangani Club are requested to roll up at iha drill shed at 7.30 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with the view of going in for a systematic course of training.
