B'ack, who was committed for trial at Gisborne, arrived in Auckland this afre?noon by the Tariwera. He was at once taken to Mount Eden Gaol. The Mariposa, which arrived from ’Frisco on Saturday night, brought the following passengers for New Zea’and : E. Harding, Mrs Clapham, Messrs Brown, Smith, New* combe, Warren and son, Rtregler, Amr*, Sarle and wife, Dorsey, Ogden, and 11 steerage. Mr Alexander, who went to America to organise a Wild West Show for Wirth Bros, returned by the Mariposa. The show follows in next steamer. Amongst the attrac*ions are 36 Indians, besides cowboyt* buffaloes, etc. SOUTHERN NEWS.
Last night. Tim.aru experienced an earthquake last evening. The Wellington citizens meet tr-morrow night to protest against the admission of Chinese into the colony. Blue Cup, an Auckland dog, won the Champion Stakei at Dauadin Coursing meeting. The prospectus of a Farmers’ Fire and Marine Insurance Assooiarion has been issued at Christchurch. The Walleend coalmine has been dismantled and 140 men and boys are thrown out of employment. At Christchurch a U riin of cooks, waiters, and waitresses has been f irmed.
The Petone Woollen Company has notified the employees of the probability of reductions owing to the scarcity of orders. An over anxious railway employee at Christchurch ha* gone crazy through worrying ovar the probabi ity of a strike. The Danedi.i Civil B°rvants have arranged for a meeting to consider the propriety of joining tbe Associariin firmed in Wallington, The Law Society of Wellington have decided to protest against clerks of the Supreme Courts being dispensed with. Edward Robinson, ex-clerk of the Wellington Customs, was committed to trial charged with embezzling Government moneys. John Edmunds, an old miner, has boon found dead in a hut at the back of the Hokitika Creek. Mr C. E. Wilson, a memtar of the Wellington City Council, contests a ci y constituency at the elections. The Hokitika police are making raids on bakers for selling bread of short weight. St. M»rcus’ Roman Citholic Church, a new structure in Manchester Street, Christchurch, was consecrated yesterday by Archbishop R jdwood. The Wellington commercial gentlemen presented Mr J. J. Hart with a purse of sovereigns and an address on his retirementfrom the Customs, after 25 years’ service. Tho Maritime Council have derided not to strike over the Whitcombe and Tombs question, but tho firm’s goods will be boycotted by the Trades Unions all over the colony. Mr Gillies has resigned the secretaryship of the Dunedtn Harbor Board. Walton is still missing from Woodville, and a search in the Gorgo revealed traces of him. It is feared he has met with foul pl»y.
