POLITICAL NOTES.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, last nigh\ A correspondence is going on between the Premier and Mr Lomus re the Greymouth coal difficulty, but nothing has been settled yet. Mr Lomas had another interview with Ministers this morning. Government have received a cable mes* sage from Mr Creighton, agent at ’Frisco th it the Tonnage Subsidy Bill has not pxssed, but the United States Government offer a subsidy of £12,000 for one year. Government do not consider th s enough.
A schedule of Bills named in the compact drawn up between Government and Opposition for the early close of session incudes those to be gone on witn this session, the Opposition, however, giving no pledges how they are to be dealt with. The Bills are:—Truck Bill, Coalmines Act Amendment, Employers Liability, Shipping and Seamen’s Amendment, Education Reserves Leasing, Todmann Land Grant, Industrial Schools, Mining Company’s Amendment, Children’s Protection, Sheep Bill, Oaths Census Amendment, Dentists Act Amendment, Factories and Shops, Law of Libel, Native Land Liws Amendment, Horowhenua Puotu Land Grant, E luoation Reserves, Electoral Laws Amendment, Mercantile Agents and Westport Ngakawau Riilway Extension Among the bills the fate of which is sealed are — The Licensing Prohibition, Civil S. rvice Classification, Mining Laws, Arbitration, Bankruptcy, Hospital and Charitable Aid. Tho Supreme Court Act Amendment Bill, which provides for the appointment of a sixth judge, will also be dropped. The question of Judge Edwards appointment will be left for the consideration of the new Parliament.
Ministers, in their written compact with the Opposition, und jrtake that in the event of the election going decidedly against them they will resign immediately, without waiting for Parliament to assemble.
