TARANAKI V. HAWKE’S BAY. The following is a description of the above match, as given by the Hawke’s Bay Herald
Hawke’s Bay dribbled off, and the ball rising Hefferman marked it and kicked out past the c°ntre, a succession of punts ending in the local 25. Hawke’s Bay gradually worked back to the centre, but the visitors, aided by the wind, rushed over the Jine in a body and Livingston secured a try. Songster tried the place kick, but the score was not enhanced. A series of scrums followed in the Hawke’s Bay 25, the local men doing their best to keep the ball in. Friday ultimately got possession and passed to Taku, who in turn passed to Wihape, and the latter ran beyond the centre flag, a punt by A. Bayley causing a force shortly after. More scrums and short runs enabled the Hawke’s Bay men to pass the centre, where the ball was heeled out to A. Bayley, who potted, a resulting. After another force down Wihape intercepted a pass and ran to the Taranaki 25. He was collared by the fullback, and Taku getting the ball kicked for touch, and it blew over the fence into the swamp. On the ball being thrown in the local forwards rushed up the line, and. Hiroa got over, but was brought back. A Taranaki forward recovered all the ground with a long punt, and A. Bayley shortly after kicked another poster. A. Good was being assiduously fed, and after two runs was collared, first by L Quesne and then by Taku, but a punt soon after caused another force. Scrums in the Hawke’s Bay 25 were equally held, and force downs from punts occurred with monotonous iteration. Robert, Friday, and Taku, with Morrison and Hiroa, came right up the field and threatened the Taranaki goal, but a long punt by Bayley aet matters to their former course. Another rush of Napier forwards was similarly nullified, but they eime once more to the attack, and Goldsmith kicked out near .the corner flag. After the throw in Friday passed to Taku, and he to Wihape, who was well out across the field. 4 score seemed inevitable, but the wind made the ball unruly, and the Te Ante man failed to pick it up soon enough to escape being collared. After the kick off play was quickly in the Taranaki 25, the visiting backs committing the tactical error of making high punts that were blown back. One of the backs sent the ball into McGuy’s garden. After some delay it was brought back, and the visitors were forced. The Taranaki forwards led by Heffernan and Sangster brought the ball to the centre, but Napier soon had it back again, and the visitors were forced twice. The Taranaki now commenced kicking the ball over the fence, first on one side and then the other, a proceeding which the crowd expressed strung disapproval of. Swan, Goldsmith, and Good showed uprere itedly for their respective sides. The ball was worked to the Napier 25, and Pearson got over, but had previously gone into touch. From a serum the ba’l was heeled out hard to A. Bayley, who ran through till collared by LeQuesne, and then passed to Hempton who scored, No goal was kicked, Taranaki, 2 points. Major ran back the kick out, and play was for a time in the Napier 25. Wihape intercepted a pass, and admist a roar of (cheering raced to the opposite end, where W. Bayley stopped him. Goldsmith ran through to the full back, and very exciting play ensued in the visitors’ 25, but the local men could not score, and the game ended in a win for Taranaki by two points to nil.l
