FOOTBALL.

THE PREMIER LOCAL MATCH. The contest between the Gisborne and Turanganui fifteens this afternoon is expected to produce a sp'endid game. The Turanganui c ub is uuforcunate in having to play without,Skeet. while the Gisborne C ub lose the service of L. Reee. The opinion at present is rather in favour of the Turanganui fifteen, who certainly deserve to win from the energetic way in which they ‘have gone about their work. They have taken good care not to treat their opponents lightly, and whatever the result is they will be highly applauded for keeping up to their work so well.

The enthusiasm in local football circles was demonstrated at the athletic display on Thursday evening, when cries of “ Gisborne I” and “ Turanganui I” rang out clearly above the tumult of applause. The Turanganuians took ail the credit for Fred O’Meara’s clever win in the bicycle race, and also Loomb’s win in the hurdles. When the walking match came on, all Club rivalry gave way to a unanimous demonstration in favor of G. Johnstone, whose great popularity was shown by the applause accorded him from start to finish.

The H.B. Rugby Union had aoreed to October 3 as the date for the annual football match with Gisborne. In regard to Mr Staite’s letter, the Union declined to arrange to have the match on an. earlier date, but a telegram was received yesterday stating that September 12 had been agreed to as the date.

The Napier Ranger footballers, who are expected to visit Gisborne, do not seem to shine much in the field. They met the County Second at Farndon last week, when the latter won by three points to two. In a third fifteen match against the Caledonians the Rangers failed to raise a team. The Taranaki footballers passed through Wanganui this week on their return home. Several of them bore marks of haying been through a rough campaign, bruises and broken ribs being numerous among the team. A general meeting of all the footbali Clubs in the district will be held in the High School this evening at 7.30 to consider the abvisableness of forming a Rugby Union, and other matters.
