Public Service Association.
At a meeting of Civil Servants on Tuesday night fifteen gentlemen attended. Mr D. Johnston was voted to the chair, and said the meeting had been called to form a branch of the Public Service Association. He thoroughly sympathised with the movement, and hoped it would be for the good of the public service in New Zealand. On the proposition r f Mr Buscke, seconded by Mr Hall, Mr Featon was appointed Secretary. On the motion of Mr Gold Smith, seconded by Mr Greenwood, a resolution was carried acquiescing in the movement to form a Public Service Association. Mr Gold Smith said that at present [the departments of the Service were so disconnected that they could be buffetted about like a football. As the Governor had favored the prtsent movement they could feel sure of success. A statement had been made to the effect that the Servic would exercise an influence on Parliament but this would not necessari’y follow. Mr Greenwood said the service had often been called an “ un-Civil one,” but he hoped that when this Association was formed it would prevent anything happening that would bring reproach to them. The following Committee were e’ected, on the motion of Mr Campbell Thompson;— Messrs J. Booth, J. Brooking, Featon, Greenwood, Gold Smith, and D, Johnston.
