THE HUTCHISON CHARGES.
The interest in the Hutchison charges has almost died out at present, but at an early date it is sure to be revived. Some of the most ridiculous attempts have been made by Government supporters to create “political capital ” by circulating stories to the effect that Mr Hutchison tried to evade service of the writ for libel—a falsehood which has been exposed by Mr Hutchison himself. The Post thus comments on Mr Hislop’s reply to the speech made by Mr Hutchison “It may suit Mr Hislop to term Mr Hutchison’s speech last night ‘flimsy,’ but the public will not so characterise it. On the contrary, they will regard it as a forcible and powerful reply to and criticism of Sir Harry Atkinson's memorandum relative to the deal ings of the Government with the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Hislop did not attempt to disprove Mr Hutchison’s facts or figures, and Mr Scobie Mackenzie signally failed in his well meant endeavours to cover Mr Hislop’s failure by a display of oratorical fireworks, If Mr Hutchison's alleged facts and plain figures are correct—and they haye not been disproved—the deduction to be drawn from them urn doubtedly justifies the charges which the member for Waitotara has formulated against the Ministry. The House is evidently incapable of arriving at any conclusion as to the truth or falsehood of the assertions upon which the charges are based. It has already wasted an enormous amount of time over useless discussion on the subject. It is apparent that no finality is to be arrived at by debate. Practically the matter remains after last night’s talk just where it did at first, and so far as we can see it is likely to remain there, for the Government show no desire whatever to have it thoroughly investigated and cleared up. The threatened action by Sir Frederick Whitaker does not affect the charges against the Ministry collectively, and even if it did there is very little likelihood of it clearing up anything.”
