THE BOROUGH ELECTION.

An election takes place to-day to fill the three ordinary vacancies occurring in the Gisborne Borough Council. Very little interest is taken in the contest, the prevalence of more exciting, and far more important, matters making anything merely connected with the Municipalty to fall flat. Were there not other points of interest to absorb nearly al! attention, the interest in the contest would probably not be greater. The low financial position of the Council makes new works a matter for hope in the distant future, leaving not the slightest chance of realisation within a reasonable period. Still this is the point which ought to keep, the ratepayers alive to their interests. Any representative can scatter the cash if it is available; and with the safeguard of a critical public- always viewing his actions, the chances are that he may be more often right than wrong. But it is quite a different thing to try and give a large amount of satisfaction with an exceedingly small supply of funds, and at the same time to turn a deaf ear. to the pleadings and grumblings of ratepayers who want more than they are entitled to in the .circumstances. The candidates from whom to-day’s selection must be made are al! well-known, and have all had experience as Councillors. Each man can be fairly judged by his works. Whatever the selection is, it can only be from five candidates who have proved their worth.
