W. Brassey’s Experiences.

COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Napier, last night. Willoughby Brassey appeared at the R.M. Court yesterday, on remand, charged with obtaining from P. A. Herman by false pretences. Messrs Lascelles and Cornford prosecuted, and Mr Cresswell defended. It appeared that Brassey had several times borrowed small amounts from Heiman for a day or two, and on the 15th August he exchanged cheques for with Herman, till next day, Brassey adding 2s 6d to his cheque. Next day Brassey substituted a cheque for 3s 6d for the first one, and asked that it be held over until Monday. On that day he asked that it be held over till Wednesday, when he would, he said, be receiving The cheque was, however, returned that day, dishonored. The false pretence alleged was that Brassey had no account at the Bank of Australasia, on which the cheque had been drawn. The defence was that the cheque was merely given as an acknowledgment of the debt, and that Herman knew that Brassey had no account at the Bank.

Captain Preece reserved judgment until this morning, when His Worship committed accused for trial at the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, in two sureties of £7s each.

CREDITORS’ MEETING. Napier, last night. A meeting of the creditors of W. Brassey was held this afternoon. Mr Cresswell appeared for the debtor. Mr Brassey stated that he had not had time to draw up a statement of the causes of his insolvency. He had beard that remarks had been made as to certain accounts which were owing to him, and he intended to show that those remarks were unfounded.

The Assignee asked that the meeting be adjourned till Wednesday, as debtor promised to furnish a full statement of the debts owing to him by Tuesday. The meeting was adjourned accordingly.
