A Cowardly Scoundrel.

Mklrovrne, August 26. A villainous-looking fellow named Thomas Reynolds was charged at the Carlton Court this morning with committing an aggravated assault upon Bridget Reynolds - his mother, The prisoner has served one sentence of three months for assaulting his father, and several times for minor offences.

The evidence showed that this morning, about 1 o’clock, Reynolds went home slightly under the Influence of liquor, and demanded a lighted candle. This his father gave him, and the prisoner then roused his mother, who is 60 years of age, from her bed, and seizing her by the hair struck her violently, and knocking her down kicked her. Senior constable Callander was summoned, and found the woman bleeding profusely from a wound, an inch and a half in length, on her head. The prisoner having heard the evb denoe forced out a few soant tears, and said :—

I hope your Worships will not treat me badly. Don't believe what has been said. Sergeant Doyle: Your Worships, this man's parents have taken out more summonses r.g-.irmt lheir son since I have been here than any other dozen persona have done, and each time they refuse to prosecute when the case comes on. This time, although there is a summons out against him, the police have moved in tbe matter. Mr Buckle, J.P., chairman ; You are a disgrace to society', prisoner. You are worse than a brute to beat your old parents as you have done. You are sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, and without the option of a fine.
