NAPIER NEWS-NOTES.
[special to the standard.] Napier, last night. At a meeting of the Education Board yesterday a letter was read from the Gisborno Committee, explaining the reason for having incurred certain expenditure for apparatus without first obtaining the Board’s consent. It was decided that the amount be passed, but in future no payment will be made unless the expenditure has been previously authorised. Another letter from the Gisborne School Committee asked that a portion of the surplus from the High School funds be expended on the establishment of scholarships of the value of £3O for country pupils and £lO for town pupils. It was decided that the funds at the disposal of the Board are insufficient for ill? purpose. A letter was read from the Typographical Association, asking that Whitcombe and Tombs’ publications be not used in the schools. It was decided that the Minister of Education having approved of the use of certain books by an order in Council, neither the Board nor committees had power to forbid their use without special permission from Wellington. The adjourned meeting of creditors- in the estate of Willoughby Brassey was held this afternoon. The debtor stated that he was doing well in Napier, and if he had not been pressed by Gisborne and Napier creditors he wou’d have got through all right. If the estate were properly managed he felt satisfied that it would pay 20s in the pound. .. He had been so worried with other matters that he had not been able to explain the book.debts as he had promised. After the bankrupt answering some questions the meeting was adjourned to next Monday afternoon.
