SPORTING.
The following is a description of.the race for the A J.C. Metropolitan Stakes :— Little Bernie, by Cheviot —Myrtle, 6.11, 1; Papua 2, The Queen 3. Eight others faced the starter. From a good start Antreus was first away, followed by Paris and Federation, ’Frisco being the last to move. Antteus led into the straight by three lengths, and on the stand for first time was six lengths ahead of ’Frisco, who in his turn was a length ahead of Paris and Pretty Kate, Papua whipping in the field. Antreus increased his h ad to eight, lengths by the time Cutts’ was passed After going another furlong, the horses were in a cluster, but about half a mile from home Little Bernie -shot out from the ruck, and maintaining his advantage to th« finish, won by a length and a-half. Steeplechase—Grafton 1, Reuben 2, Marmion 3. SixTiorscg started. Marmion led until the last round, when he fell, but being remounted secured third place. Won by two lengths. Waverley Handicap—Claremont 1, Little Bernie 2, Ellerdale 3. Six started. Won by a length.
The Randwick Plate—Melos 1, Whimberel 2. Gresford 3. Five started. A good start saw Whimberel rush away to the front and he maintained the lead to the home bend, when Melos, who had been pulling double throughout, was given his head, anci soon settling Whimberel, won comfortably by a length.
The effect of Wolverine’s victories st the Dunedin Hunt Club Meeting has been to bring him into prominence for the New Zealand Cup, and he now rules as tecond favorite—Merrie England being first—at abnut 5 to 1.
The following nominations have been received for the Otago Cup, of 500sovs., one mile and three-quarters, to be run at the forthcoming D. J.C. Meeting :—Aronoel, St. Andrew, Katinka, Queen of Trumps, Lord Aston, Cruchfidd, Freedom, St. Malo, Tit, Prime Warden, Occident, Mariner, Tempest, Medallion, Palliser, Liquidation, Milord, Dispute, Wolverine, Wayland, and Merrie England.
A correspondent favors us with a rep’y to a sporting query in last issue:—The Colonel won the Liverpool Grand Na'ional twice in succession, in 1869 end 1870, not thrice. The Lamb won it in 1868 and 1871. .
