The New Harbor Act.

Ax the last meeting of the Harbor Board tbe following letter.td Mr Bell, add reply by that gentleman, were read : —

[TO MR BELL,]

I am instructed to inform you at ffi B last meeting of ffie Board a motion was unanimously carried expressing its thanks to you for the active assistance you rendered the Member for this district in promoting the passage of the Harbor Bill through Parliament. The measure as passed has rendered the relief required to enable the Board to meet its engagements, and the district has been saved lhe disgrace which would have been attached, had repudiation of its liabilities been allowed. And ths members of lhe Board feel that the good service? rendered by you lpve largely contributed to the success obtained. Yours, <Sfc,, J. Bodrke, Secretary, [bmly.J

I am very much obliged to the Board for their appreciation of what little service I was able to tender, but I am afraid their kindneis has exaggerated my part. The truth is that Mr Arthur kept me, as well as tbe committee, constantly at work, and it is to him in reality, and'to his determination tliat everyone concerned in it should be always moving, ffiat success is due, I can only repeat what I said in Gisborne that I have been really glad of the opportunity to help io the passing of a measure, right and just iu itee'f, which has prevented a default, tbe disgrace of which must have affected the Colony as well as your particular district. And I now add that the result has amply repaid me far any trouble qnd anxiity during the session.—Yours very truly, H. D. Bbli,. Mr Arthur apologised for not having replied to the letter of thanks sent to him, but he thought he would defer the matter until he personally attended the meeting, He was gratified to know that his services had been appreciated. At the same time he considered he had done nothing math than bis duly. (" Etear, hear,")
