GREAT FIRE IN SYDNEY.
SYDNEY. The most destructive fire that has ever happened in this colony broke out early on Thursday morning, and raged more than four hours. The outbreak happened in the premises of Gibbs, Shallard, and Co., printers, and these and many warehouses and other large premises were destroyed. Twenty-five fire brigades were engaged in the work of suppressing the fire. Several firemen were seriously injured by the falling walls. The loss exceeds a million sterling. The following is a list of buildings destroyed Bull and Co.’s warehouse, insured for £146,500 ; Lark and Son’s, insured for £ 105,000; Feldheim, Gottleif and Company's, insured for £106,000; Lazarus and Aaronson’s, insured for £15,000 ; Lawson and Son’s stock, £3OO- The insurances on the City Bank, Richardson, Wrench and Co.’s, and the Athenaeum Club are unknown, Gibbs, Shallard and Co. have £19,000 on their stock, and £13,000 on the building. The premises of the following were only partially destroyed:— Hughes, Chambers and Co., and Chris topher and Newton, warehousemen ; also four large buildings occupied as offices, and several small buildings in More St. It is impossible as yet to obtain details of the insurances, but so far as they can be gathered they represent a total of £BOO,OOO. Lawson and Sons estimate their loss at £15,000 over the insurance; Gibbs, Shallard and Co, theirs at £17,000. The Athenimtm was erected three years ago at a cost of £50,000. So far as is known the strong rooms of the City Bank buildings have resisted the heat. Nothing is known of the origin of the fire. The disastrous nature of the conflagration was no doubt largely the result of the hemmed in position of the buildings. One of the firemen got shut in the basement of a warehouse by the barricade of fire, and his comrades rescued him by cutting through an iron-bound door, but not before he had been pretty severely burnt and scorched, Two hundred telephone wires were broken by the falling walls. It is understood that the Commercial Union In surance Company tops the list of risks with £48,000. Then comes the Royal with £40,000 ; N. Z. Companies with £30,000 ; London, Liverpool, and Globe with £16,000, and Norwich Union with £9,000. AUCKLAND. Tbe pet of the New Zealand offices are as follows: —New Zealand £lO,OOO, South British £4,500, Union £6OO, Standard £5,000, National £5,000. The Colonial office is not affected.
