BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor, and Crs. Dunlop, McLernon, Joyce, Hepburn, Taylor, Harding and Whinray. A letter was received from Mr Jones, accepting the posi ion of engineer to the Fira Brigade. At the request of Or Harding permission was granted to the Poverty Biy Rowing C ub to erect a turnsti’e on the section leading to their boat shed. Or Joyce thought thn Council shoukl write to the local agents of the Insurance Companies asking them to use their influence at the head offices to try and reduce the rates of insurance now that the Council had gone to such a great expense in Hying down the fire mains. Such a recommendation from the Council might have a good effect. Cr VVbinray s conded the motion. He said the agents were interviewed some years ago on the matter, but then the Council had not such an efficient Brigade as they had now. and he considered this would be an opportune time to lay the matter be r ore the Insurance Companies. Cr Harding suggested that a meeting be called, when the matter could be laid more fu’ly before the Companies. The Mayor Raid the Councilcould call out the Brigade at any moment and test the appliances and also show the method of working The Insurance agents had never been present at any practice of the Brigade. The motion was then agreed to. The Overseer, in his report, made soma suggestion in regard to w >rks that were required at »he engine she! and he also considered it advisable to have the well cleaned out. The old wooden culvert in Grey street has been removed and replaced by piles at a cost of £5 12’ Gd.
