Lord Hopetoun .. .. .. .. 1 “ Asmodeus” wrote as follows prior to the races:—What splendid entries have been received for the Caulfi'ld Spring meeting, to be sure. During tbe last couple of years the creme de la creme of our racing stables has been represented in the Ceu field Srak’ s, and with the exception of Titan, Melos, Carbine, and Dreadnought, all the swell performers are again engaged. It was in this race that Dreadnought downed Carbine last year, and it is s‘range that both should be absent on the present occasion. De'pitethe defection of the two cracks in question, there is quite a galaxy of talent represented, in Megaphone, Gibraltar, Marvel, Sir William, Cuirassier, Ohurohill, The Admiral and others, and under any circumstances there is sure to be an interesting race. CAULFIELD CUP.

Tarcoola was tent round the Bind traok, and put eleven furlongs behind him in 2 33, the last mi'e occupying 1 40A, and he finished strong’y. T-tm romped home in front of Sir William and Prince Consort, traversing the sand track i« 2 32, thus making hh running in the Cui field Guineas on Saturday simply inexplicable. Gibraltar and Papua went round the sand track in 2.3% and Lawyer and Despised covered a similar distance in the same time. Leopold executed a clinking gallop at Caulfield on Monday morning, his time for the mile and n-half being 2.44. Writing of the Hawke’s Bay meeting Hippona says:—St. Andrew fully confirmed bis two-year-old reputation, and is evidently a very smart customer, but it was a pity that Mr Ormond did not see fit to oppose Crackehot in the Spring Handicap, for a line would then have been obtained about St. Andrew’s staying abilities. Mr P. But lex* has a firstclass colt in Crackshot, for his performance in the big handicap more than compares with previous winners of the event, while tbe time was the fastest recorded. St. Andrew and Crackshot must both be formidable in the New Zealand Cup. The first-named has escaped a penalty, but Crackshot will have to put up "st lib, having incurred a penalty of 51b for his victory in the Spring Handicap. M. R. Halcrow, who is well known in Auckland, has again got into trouble in Sydney and has been di qualified for life. The Sydney Telegraph gives th-i following particulars cf the cause that led up to the sentence“ What the Committee of the Club were unanimous in characterising as one of the moat glaring caaea of unfair racing ever seen occurred at the Driving Park pony meeting on Saturday in ths Selling Stakes. Four horses started, inc'uding Fairy Boy (nominated by M. J. Gi’pin) and Lily (nominated by Mr George Washington) both of which belonged to M. R, H&tarow. Betting at tbe start was 2to 1 on Lily and 6 to 4 on Fairy Boy, the latter p ice altering when the ponies were once going to even money. The public had a pot of money on the gelding, which was riadenby J. Guinan*?. So barefaced was the pulling of Fairy Boy in the race that a howl of dismay arose from his backers, and when he passea the post a bad third the crowd cou'd not retain itse'f. E[uot«, groans and curses rent the air. Paihing their way through the crowd, who surged and threatened, the Committee eventually were ab’o to gather together in the office, when the owner and the jockey of Fairy Boy were Cijk-d upon for an explanation. This was not deemed satisfactory, and after de’iberation the Committee decided to disqualify Halcrow for life and Guinanefor 12 month*. The boy was given leave to apply for a removal of the disqualification at the end of six months. Nothing was done to the horse, it hoving been bought as soon as the race was over by DrG. M, Slate for £lOO.
