Woman’s Suffrage.
TO THE EDITOR. I liefencd’last night with great pleasure tn Mr Rpps’ able and interesting address. I was surprised, however, and disappointed at the speaker’s evident satisfaction with the newly-arrived-at immaeu’a l e condition of our electoral arrangements. One man, one vote ; so far so good. But can our Liberal leader be unaware of the “ nent up gey-er ” surging in th* mind of woman ? Can he be altogether indifferent to the growing injustice of leaving women—especially working women—at the mercy .of men who have already—4n more thnn one instance—betrayed their fear of her honorable competition in.the battle of life ? Does Mr R°es wish to alienate the weight of her “ influence ”—legitimate if limi’ed—to political opponents, who, both, in England and these colonies, are proving them selves willing to grant this matter of simple jush'ce rf every citizen ? Woman is surely handicapped enough by nature; let not man forge artificial fetters. Lat. the franchise disabilities die with those other relics of barbarism enumerated, or not enumerated by Mr Rees last night. Let Mr Kelly—who, I believe, voted in favor of the Bill lately thrown out at Wellington—be pledged to the support of any future meapure of a like nature • and let woman herself see to it that meantime any “ influence” she may possess, be used in this direction. Why are men afraid? What is gnod for woman, is good for man. The lives of the sexes are too closely bound up in each other to leave any room for doubt, that blessing bestowed on the one can in any way be at the expense of the other.—l am, &0., Cassandra. October 17tb, 1890. V' - H--IT. - The Women’s Franchise Bill pissed its second reading in the South Australia Assembly by 28 votes to 13.
