County Elections.
TO THE EDITOR, Sir, —The contested elections for the Cook County Council appear to have resolved into a question of new setters versus old settlers, presenting a point that is worthy of note. For the Gisborne riding we find a comparatively recently arrival fighting against one of the pioneers of the district Mr Bright I a low to be a man of ability, and Mr King, like the best of us, is not without faults, but he has well served the C »unty for many years, and is well deserving of the continued confidence of ratepaj J, ers Those who disagreed with him over the K literatahi bridge will probably, as they have no doubt a perfect right to do, bring all the support they can against his being returned again for his own riding, but those who beiieve in upholding the o’d settlers should give him their support. In the Waimata riding we have Mr Tombleson opposing Mr Gray ; the former I believe is gifted with all the qualifications necessary, but he. too, is a comparatively new arrival, while Mr Gray is a settler of long standing and has a 1! the necessary qualifications. In the Arai riding the County Chairman (Mr Clark) and MrTuohy, both settlers who have spent as many years in the district as some people have spent months, have one opponent, who may be a good man, but ia one I confess as an old resident I have no recollection of having before heard of. If this is to be a battle of new residents versus settlers of long standing, I think we should have it prod timed now, so that merit and o*her things being equal, the ratepayers will know how to show their gra’itude for the work done by the o'd hands,—l am, etc., Settler.
