The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Saturday, November 8, 1890. THE COUNTY ELECTIONS.

Be just and fe?.r not; Let al) the end? thou aim’st at be thy country's, 1 ’ Thy God’s, and truth’s.

The majority of the elections for the County of Cook are to be decided on Wednesday next. There is good reason to be satisfied with the promised constitution of the new Council, as the gentlemen who have been elected unopposed are well qualified for the positions, and the ratepayers cannot be, far wrong in their selection from the candidates in the field. In our last issue u Settler ” objected to the “new” men, not, he was careful to explain, because anything could be brought against them, beyond what he apparently considers the fault of their being new to the district. The correspondent deserves to be thanked for referring attention to one point that may weigh in the minds of some people, yet when his view is reduced to cold print it hardly requires answering. The “new” candidates have all been in the district over three years, and if the line is to be drawn at much over that it will be equal to saying that the progressive settlements of Waimata and Waerenga-a-kuri have no right at all to ask for special representation, a principle that would be too unjust to have a single advocate. The older settlers, indeed, should rather be pleased that those who have in recent years thrown in their lot with us are to be found taking an active interest in all that concerns the progress and welfare of the district. There is-ever a need in a district like this for the best men to come forward, and it is to the interest of everyone who has a stake in it that the best selection should be made. Of course, other things being equal, a settler of long-standing ivill always have a big advantage over more recent arrivals
