AUCKLAND. Last night. Sir G, Grey is still improving, but is taking no part in connection with the election. The steamer Mariposa sailed to-day with the outward mails via 'Frisco. Mr Bryce, who has just been elected unopposed for Waikato, was in town to-day, and left for Wanganui. News has been received that Wm. Lawrie, a Thames miner, was scalded to death at Broken Hill. Mr Adam Porter, the new candidate who is out for Auckland Cit/, is meeting with a great deal of support. At tbe Boman Catholic Cathedral yesterday a mission was onmmaaoei by the Bev. Fathers Vaughan, Plunkett, and O'Neill, of the Bedsmptionist Order, lately arrived from Sydney. Hawkins, tbs rider of Irish Agitator, was thrown and badly iojured at Takapuna races on Saturday. The steamer Richmond, which arrived in port here this miming from her usual six months’ South Sea trip, brings little news of importance. Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti, and Raratonga effiirs ware found to be quiet. At Tonga things seemed to bo somewhat improving. Ths criminal sessions opened to-day, The calendar is light. The Judge, in his charge, elated Hugh Shortland, 0 local solicitor, for writing to the Press in reference to a coh cealment of birth case in which he was formerly acting, and which is still tub judicr, The Judge did not tabs a serious view of tbe offence nf destroying a trig station, for which a large number of natives > ware' arrested by the Lewis expeditionary party,
