The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Saturday, December 6, 1890. EAST COAST ELECTION.

Re just and fear not; Let ali the ends thou uiui'st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and tnitn’s.

The result of the election for the East Coast is in favor of Mr Kelly, notwithstanding all the dazzling illuminations. We shall not imitate the bad taste shown by Mr Arthur last night—only those who heard his remarks can judge what was meant by the tone in which they were conveyed. We will content ourselves with saying that the earth will still go round whether Mr Arthur is or is not a membei of the new House of Representatives, and we believe the local interests of the district will be quite safe in the hands of such men as Rees and Kelly. Or course there will be great sobbing and bitter anguish shown by those of Mr Kelly’s opponents who do not know how to take a defeat, but we believe the majority ol his supporters will acknowledge that the majority, narrow though it be, was fairl) won. The Gisborne returns alone show that the election was not fought on per sonal grounds, and though no doubt the evening journal will hint that these electors should be disfranchised, or treated in some such fashion, pity and not anger will be the feeling raised. The Liberals have never yet been defeated on the East Coast, except when the votes were split, or there was a block vote from the Coast. Mr Kelly’s supporters have now fairly won the day, and we believe that the verdict of the majority will be one of which time will prove there is no reason to be regretful.
