An Advanced Thinker.
(IV THI BDITOB.] Sib,—The letter written by * Correspondent must have been misunderstood. It is not libellous, as stated by you, but treats on public matters from a public standuolnt, It is but reasonable that matters of public interest should be permitted public comment, or there is not, nor can be, public safety. Correspondent has not, nor had, any intention of assailing the private character of anyone, but hss justifiably assailed the eystem of Government that obtains in Nsw Zealand. That tbe matters treated upon are in advance of the times he freely admits, and though they do not now obtain, yet the time is elose at hand when they will. That the solanse ot tbe present time is far in advance ot the political (nd religious practices of the age is an assured fao’, and tbe well-being ot humanity demands a closer, a more important and decided investiaation of larding causes and their relative effects opbli the collective interests 0! society, Corral, pondent, in tbe letter yon refused insertion, h(S attempted io define these relative oanaas and retarding influences. He has shown that class legislation onnsistb iff laws that are a gross violation ol our aollbc ? tlve rights. He deprecates then evils from t scientific, religious, potilioa), end sooial point nf view, and asks that they should Maae, Tbe harmony of nature's laws are co-opera-tive in their mutual relations to each other, Tbe ethics of our religious' and- politics] regime are wanting, and therefore are a dead letter. It is this want of co-operation that has brought about the individualism of the oge, whose resultant is private monopolies that are destruc'ive o£ the primary and col■active rights ot humanity. Until rich mail, and our politicians generally, understand ths evil 1 hey do by what appears to me misguided legislation and unjust acquisition of riches, and the good they could do 0"Uld they but realise the power for good or evil they possess. Can we hope for a progressive development of those moral qualities it is nature’s intention all should cultivate and improve? Did the great Teapher speak truly when he said, ‘lt is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven’? Rich men cannot believe ibis—it if, a mere shade that bangs on tbe borders of a fast dying moral consciousness, and the tendency of our political individualism, if not stopped, will crush out the last remnants of the golden borders that link man's (obi to the ' unseen. Sir, it te because I know that man does not die —he merely changez, and the morel actions ol bis life build up a physical force that cannot pass the pearly gates freighted with a cargo of human suffering and wrong through an in, ordinate desire to grow rich at tbs expense of others. How if It that rich men never wash, and all riches are tbe product ot labor ? It would be easy for me to fill columns with unanswerable arguments against nur present politioal administration, Ad.,—lst this suffice, I again say that nothing in the letter you refused insertion was libellous—it waa written with the best intentions, was true in fact, iu purpose, and detail, and contained jn |t| embodiment views wil| !;• aniverealij recognised and practised ere a decade shall have passed away. In conclusion I may say that I recognise the sight ot the editor to retuse insertion, though I cannot accede to ths grounds ol your refusal.—l am, etc, UusugnottMUf,
