BOROUGH COUNCIL.
THE^bovc"met on Tuesday evening, Present: thd Mayor and Crs Dunlop, Joyce, Hepburn, Coleman, and Lewis. A letter was read from the Fire Insurance Association stating that they did not at present feel in a position to recommend reduction of th- fire risk in the district.—Or Coleman said the Council could only urge the matter again in the future. —The Mayor mentioned that several offices ha I withdrawn altogether from conducting business in the district.—Or Coleman said the South British would not insure above Bright street. The letter re the footbridge, from the County Council, which was read at the last meeting, again came up for discussion. Cr Joyce suggested ihat the Overseer interview the various contractors, and get a rough estimate for repairing and widening the span to 35 feet.—Cr DunL>p said he did not think the Borough should contribute more than half the cost of reinstating the bridge, and half the oast of maintaining it. tie thought tbe CuUnty Council and WhataupOKo ttoad Board should pay > he other half.— The Mayor said «h*y were nut in a position to ask for such information as suggested by Cr Joyce; it might bs that the Council were pot unanimous in granting any money towards the reconstruction uf the bridge.— Cr Lewis thought it was the County C 'Uncii’s place to do the work, fhe Boiough Council had made a very lioeral offer when they proposed giving £3O. —There being no seconder to Or Joyce’s motion the matter was left in abeyance. Mr C. C. Lucas wrote stating that it would now be a good time to agitate for a flooring bath oh the Turanguuni £tivr*r, and as the bath would be under the control of the Council, he ventured to address that body on the matter. He stated that it had been euggested to purchase from the Harbor B »ard a punt which could be fitted up for the purpose, at a cost of £5O, the Council granting say £2O, and the reiuahxder being raised by sunarnpriou. The punt could i»e moored under the TUrahganui bridge.— i'he Mayor: 1 suppose Mr Lucie refers to the sand pump.—Cr Joyce said the position was centrally situated, but be did nut think the Council had any funds at their disposal for such work.—lt was decided to rep y to Mr I Lucas, stating that the Council were not in a position t » carry out the idea. The Overseer, in his report, mentioned that he had overhauled the firebeli stand, and suggested that repairs be ma ie at a cost of about 15s. Mr Gibson, the owuer of the section, add that he would shortly be building on that corner, and before any repairs •were effected he suggested that it would be advisable to remove the bell off bis section, Tne day labor employed cost £l2 8s 3d. The Mnyor said the repairs to the bell could be made, but be did not think there Wiany mces-ity to remove it at present. -On the motion cf Cr Dunlop, seconded by Cr Lewis, it Was agreed to purchase (be horse now i<* use by the Council, for £lB.
The Fire Inspector made a general report, in which he asked the attendance of the Councillors at the annual competition to be he d ou New Year’s Day. Morgan £1 9s, Hicks and Ready £1 12s. Permission was granted to the Garrison Band co cut down two trees in front of the platform in Peel street.
