BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor, and Crs Whinray, Hepburn, Hardiug, Lewis, Joyce, Taylor, Coleman, Dunlop, and McLernon.
An application for work was received from G. Williamson, to enable him to pay the amount of his rates.—Application granted. Mr Wm. Adair wrote asking that the street in front of hia premises in Gladstone Road and Lowe Street be repaired.—After some discussion, it was decided that the Overseer report at next meeting on the probable cost at the repairs. Mr R. Watson, solicitor, wrote, on behalf of several of the ratepayers in the Borough, stating that if auy cf cite funds of the Borough were voted towards the Taruheru footbridge, without a poll of the inhabitants first being taken, members voting for the same would be held personally liable. Mr Finn, Borough solicitor, wrote re the power of the Council to take a road through the Recreation reserve, expressing the opinion that the Council has full power and authority to take that portion of the reserve required and to lay out the proposed street, and that doing eo would not oast any responsibility upon the Council for the repair and maintenance of the bridge. lie the bridge, Mr Finn thought the Council would be justified in requesting the Governor, under the provisions of "The Public Works Act, 1882, Amendment Act, 1887," whether it is expedient to vest the control of this bridge in one of the local authorities, and if so to fix and determine what part of the cost of repair and maintenance is to be provided and paid by tha other bodies. Cr Whinray moved that the Clerk take the necessary steps to declare a public road through the Recreation Ground, from Carnarvon street to Disraeli street, along the boundary of the Taruheru river.—Cr Joyce seconded. After eome further discussion the following amendment, moved by Cr Coleman, and seconded by Cr Lewis, was carried on the casting vote of the Chairman i — ‘ ‘ That application ba made to the Governor under the Public Works Act, to vest the bridge in eoma local body, and arrange as to what amount each local body shall contribute towards the re-erec'.ion and maintenance." For: The Mayor and Crs Coleman, Lewis, Harding, and Dualop. Against: Crs McLernon, Joyce, Hepburn, Taylor, and Whinray. The Overseer reported having examined the horse obtained from Mr Phipps, and.admitted the scald on the back was caused by ihe saddle, but with regard to the mark cm the foreleg, nothing was known as to how or where it was done. He therefore left the matter in the hands of the Council. The Overseer also reported on some small works, and mentioned that the day labor amounted to £8 18s 6d.
It was decided to give Mr Phipps £2 compensation for tha damage to hia horse. On the motion of Cr Lewie, see.'n led by Cr Whinray, Mr D. Johnston was appointed a Governor of the High School.
