Then the dark brown and black volumes would roll in front, and the landscape would be darkened with a peculiar shadow. The sun would now present the appearance of yellow molten gold in the middle of a crimson cloud gradually growing lighter, or rather blacker towards the edges. Houses and fences were suddenly painted with extraordinary hues, varying from light green to yellow, and in the interior, the rays reflected through window panes, colored every object with the brightest tints of ipink and vermillion. As the sun descended, clouds began to rise and these were fringed with all the colors of the spectrum, rich golden or orange tints predominating, Seldom, or never, has such a spectacle been presented to the inhabitants of a town; and the curiosity of children especially was immensely tickled with the extraordinary colors that seemed to float everywhere within and without. la the meantime the fire was spreading over the Mauaia to the South of Mas ter ton.
