COUNTY COUNCIL.
The above body met yesterday afternoon. Present: Crs Clark (Chairman), Tuohy Hepburn, Murphy, Orr, Wethercd, Gray, and King. Mr P. Barker again wrote drawing attention to the disgraceful alate of the unmade portion of the Ormond-Waimata road. -Or Gray proposed that the crossing be gravelled. Cr Hepburn seconded. The Chairman mentioned that the County funds could not stand much strain on them, since Waiapu had been taken ont of the County. He would rather see a report from the Engineer on the road. The Engineer said it would cost fully £lOO to make the unfinished portion of the road, but to gravel and repair tbecrossioga it would cost about £2O or £25. Cr King proposed as an amendment that the Engineer prepare an estimate of the works required in each riding. The Chairman seconded the amendment, which was carried. The ranger reported having impounded 58 head of cattle, and collected 15s. W. Elliott, Auckland, wrote asking the Council to farther consider the mailer of refunding the deposit of £lOO for the Kaiteratahi bridge, and again pointing out that the mistake arose through his being actively engaged in election matters. He also telegraphed on the 21st:—Be deposit with bridge tender—steamer two days behind time, alee I should have been in time for your meeting, Cannot arrive before Saturday.—Received. Charles Delta wrote, forfaiting bis deposit on tender far works at Tiniroto. The Bank of New Zealand wrote, drawing attention to the fact that the overdraft bad reached £4.889 9a sd, and intimating that tha Bank would not in any way release any portion of the original County of Cook from the legal obligation in respect of the overdraft, unless or until its consent it obtained. The following tenders were received tor road metal
It was decided to call for tenders tor maintenance contracts. Cr Murphy gave notice of motion that an estimate be made of the amount of money available tor the coming year; that the Ccunoil fix tha amount each riding shall spend after deducting working expenses, charitable aid, etc. The Engineer asked the Council to decide whether or not they would grant him seven weeks’ leave of absence in the year, be being engaged as atarter for the Napier races. Ha was willing to forego £5O a year providing hie request was granted, or £1 a day during the time he was away. It was agreed to accede to the request, the the Engineer allowing £1 a day during his absence, and should there bo any work that required attending to, he should put on a man at his own cost, •
