Death of an Old Settler.
An old identity died on Saturday morning, in the person of Mr Robert Williams, of Waerenga-a-hika, He was over 72 years of age, and had been ailing for some time; he had neglected bis health, and i< flammation of the bowels had set in, Mr Williams had been twenty years in the Poverty Bay district, with the intermission of a trip to England about six years ago. He was not uf regular habits, but was a great sufferer from ailmen's, and his trip Home was for the purpose of securing special medical skill. He was financially in flourishing circumstances, being the owner of 247 acres of land when he died. So far as we can learn he came to New Zealand over thirty years ago. and joined the constabulary, seeing a great deal of the troubled times of that period of New Zealand history, His life was fu lof vicissitudes. He made a lot of money by buying up ther grants of those who were awarded areas of land for mili ary services, Th >se speculations proved very remunerative, and he also did fel m ingering and other work, including the exporting of stock to ihe Auckland market. If the reminiscences of Williams life could be written by anyone, they would be very interesting reading.
