Tuesday, January 27, 1891. THE INDIGNATION.
Be just and fear not; Lot all the ends thou aim’st at) be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.
From all parts of the colony there comes a chorus of disapprobation against the action of the Governor in foisting a lot of new Councillors upon the country. Added to this, his snub to those who pay his salary is not likely to be forgotten. His action will give a last fatal blow to the bogey of Imperialism that place-hunters have so long been trying to establish. Were the new Councillors saints from on high, the manner of making the appointments would be none the less objectionable. But the men selected are not saints: they are only of the ordinary human clay. With the exception perhaps of Mr Fulton and Sir Harry Atkinson, they have no title whatever to the favor, if to be appointed under such circumstances can be called a favor. In the old days of political jobbery nothing was found to equal the recent scandal. How a Ministry capable of such conduct could have so long been trusted with office is a mystery that can only be cleared up by those who know how principle has been sacrificed to expediency. Even down to the roll of Justices of the Peace the moribund Ministry have taken advantage of the last moment to reward their friends. We believe that the Continuous Ministry has now for ever been relegated to the obscurity of the past, and that its last remnant has been disposed of by its own evil-doing. Mr Ballance is now the figure upon whom all eyes rest. His position is one of exceptional difficulty, and he is sure to be assailed with all the vshemenence of desperation by those who have so long sought to uphold the disgraced Ministry that is now being hooted from office.
