A MATTER FOR ENQUIRY.

Now that Mr Cadman has. taken the portfolio of Native Minister we trust that one scandal will be cleared up. That is in regard to the appointment of the Native Land Commissioner. The

appointment promised to | Judge Barton, as admitted in Parliament, and the cause of the shifts behind the scenes have yet to be cleared up. The Commission set out with all kinds of legai tomfoolery, wigs, gowns, and other vanities of olden times. It would perhaps have been of no consequence if only these little samples of frippery were introduced into a Court whose sole object was understood to be to do away with unnecessary formality and apply itself specially to equity. That, however, is neither here nor there at the present time. What we want to know is why a man in whom such confidence was placed, one with the experience and special qualifications for the work, and one to whom the appointment was promised,-was quietly ignored in the matter. When the records in the office pigeon-holes are being dusted Air Cadman might secure some information that would throw light on the mysterious affair.
