The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Saturday, March 7, 1891. “ONE PEOPLE, ONE DESTINY."

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aixn’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

The Federal Convention now being held in New South Wales is an epoch in the history of the colonies. So far as New Zealand is concerned there can be nothing conclusive done at the Convention. Her sympathies must ever be with the sister colonies, but there are too many objections to be overcome before New Zealand can join in the Federation. She is a country quite distinct from the other colonies, and while she will extend support wherever possible in the present, it is clear that she cannot join in the Federation until her time is ripe, many years hence. The other colonies seem to fully recognise this, and it is probable that New Zealand will be allowed the privilege of entering the Federation at some future period. For the present we must hope that the bond of sympathy between the colonies will continue to gain new strength, and that the present Convention may only be a precursor of that great Federation of English-speaking people to which many far-seeing men confidently look forward.
