THE REGATTA.
THE PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS.
Fob years past the idea of holding an annual regatta in Gisborne has been mooted, but from various causes nothing definite has ever been done prior to the action that has been taken within tbe past few weeks. Now the affair has been gone into in such a spirited way as to snake it a certainty, and, there is also excellent reason to hope, a great success. Gisborne is a place well suited for the holding of regattas; there is tbe bay for yachting and such purposes, and the rivers for rowing, and with a little energetic working up a regatta would probably become an annual fixture. The spectators arc under no expense, and a great crowd ought to be attracted to town for regatta day. The preliminaries for the inaugural regatta ou Easter Monday have now been settled as far as possible. Ou Tuesday evening there was a good representative meeting at the Argyll Hotel of those who are taking an active interest iu the affair, Mr Boylan being in the chair. The Canvassing Committee reported that they had met with success that was moet encouraging. Their time had been limited, and therefore Ibey had not been able to obtain a number of subscriptions they knew to be available. By that evening their list showed a total of £55 7s, which could all be collected oh application. Mr McLernon bad generously. offered to give a cup valued at seven guineas, making the stipulation that the cup should only be given on tbe regatta being an assured auooea.. The Committee regretted that they had been unable to see the representatives of the two local Bowing Clubs, but they had deemed it necessary to be first certain of succeeding in their canvass. Those present expressed themselves well pleased with tbe progress that had been made. It was decided to keep ths subscription list open until Saturday next. Ths election of officers was proceeded with. Mr A, O, Arthur waa elected President, and Mr D< Dougherty Vice-President. It was decided to a«k Ooienel Simeon to accept the position of Judge. Messrs G> L> Sunderland and W. F. Crawford that of Stariera, and Captain Thompson end Messrs Woods and Euston that of Handicapping Committee, Mr Ratcliffe was appointed Umpire, and tbe following General Committee were elected: Messrs McLernon. Prichard, Boylan, Townley, G. Watson, L. Beet, and Captain Kennedy. It was suggested that tha members of the Rowing Clubs would have their own organisations by which to render assistance, and it would be better for the General Committee to be restricted to a workable number,
There was a little general discussion. It Was mentioned that there would probably be great competition in the whaleboat race if a good prise wets offered. There are a large number of boats at different places along the coast, and it is poetible that a grand contest may be arranged. A great deal of interest is also centred in the rowing events, add rowing representatives are to be present tram Auckland, Napier, and Wellington.
