Lord Nunthorpe is dead. Betting is 9 to 4 on the Oxford crew. Dr Magee has been enthroned as Archbishop of York. The Bank of New Zealand new issue of shares are £9. The postal agreement between England and France has been issued.
The statement that the Cumming libe 1 action has been settled is denied. The Ah Foy decision has been contrary to the admission of Chinese to Victoria. Mr Gladstone declares that the British Government has presented a fictitious surplus.
The Portuguese have released the steamer Countess of Carnarvon and the crew.
All Portuguese officers on leave have been urgently summoned foi active duty. Mr Gladstone says that his views concerning Home Rule are unchanged. Mr Parnell has addressed a meeting of 50,000 persons at York, when great en thusiasm was displayed.
Mr Justin McCarthy presided over a banquet of seceders. A letter was read from Cardinal Manning, expressing his agreement with the attitude of the Irish Bishops relative to affairs in Ireland. Mr Maurice Healy, M. P. for Cork city, has accepted Mr Parnell’s challenge, and they will both resign their seats for Cork City, and seek re-election for that electorate.
The auxiliary squadron for Australia will assembleat Spithead about the middle of April for the trial of the torpedo equipment, and for inspection by the Colonial authorities and the Admiralty. The Colonising Committee report that while the bulk of Colonial opinion is adverse to State-assisted emigration, it is not expedient to commence it. They would not, however, oppose any scheme in that direction if individual colonies interested concurred.
It is stated that all the Sicilians lynched at New York were American cttizens, having been naturalised.
Newfoundland has been asked to nominate a delegate to take part in the arbitration on the fishery question, which commences shortly at Brussels. Sir John Gorst urges the Government formulate a distinct labor programme.
