St. Andrew’s Literary Society.
The annual meeting of the members of the above was held last night, the Bev. Mr Ry burn occupying the chair. The report was read by the Secretary, Mr T. Adair. Thirteen meetings had been held daring the last session; the the ordinary attendance had not been so good as during the previous session, but this was accountable in the want of President, through the Church being without a resident Minister, Th» membership was 17, the average attendance being 11. The interesting lectures given by the Rev. R. Williams, the Ven. Archdeacon Williams, and Mr Hugo,, had proved very successful, and hud on each evening attracted a large attendance of the public. Essays had been given by Messrs Smail), Evans, Armstrong, and McCallum. There had been three issues of the manuscript journal, but the editor had not had such assistance as could be wished. The short essays delivered during the session were exceptionally good, the essayists being MisHea Sutherland, A. Evans, and Bhck, and Messrs Rosie and Parnell. Two interesting biographical sketches had also been given, one on Tennyson by Miss Adair, and one On Milton by Miss Evans. Other evenings had been devoted to readings, rec Patio is, e c., while the annual soiree on May 6 had been very successful. The report went on to mention ths lons the Society had sustained by the departure of Messrs Smaill and J. Johnston, who had from the first t*ken great Interest in the work and given great ansistance. In conulusi-n the Comniictee tendered their warm thanks fur the support accorded during the session, The election of officers was proceeded With, but as many members were unable to be present, or from some cause had not attended, it was decided to defer the election until a meeting on Thursday week. A number of new members were elected, and a hope was expressed that all members would attend the meetings and do their best to put life into the work of the Society.
