The Taranaki Herald is urging that the whole of the harbors of the colony, should be handed over to the Rd'way Commissioners to manage conjointly with the railways. Our contemporary “ certain it would prove a great saving, and the chargee on produce shipped away might be lessened without increasing in any way the cost on merchandise landed at the wharves in the colony. The indebtedness of the harbor boards of the co’ony in the shape of loan amount to £3.155.000, on which interest is being paid at the rate of 5 and 6 per cent. If the management of the harbors was taken over bv ’he colony, and lhe loans converted into 3f or 4 per cant, debentures, the Government would make a handsome thing out of the transaction ”
